Physicists and engineers at the University of California, lead by Roland Kawakami, are attempting to replace conventional silicon electronics with a new way of computing, which should be able to process large-scale applications faster. They are looking to integrate the functions of logic and memory in a single chip. The building blocks of this new chip are magnetologic gates, similar to how transistors are the basis of today's electronics. The gate would be made of graphene and magnetic electrodes, which store data, while electrons would move through the graphene and use spin state to store/process information.
